If you want to live the rest of your life in relative peace – i.e. no refusing to answer the telephone or the door because you’re afraid it’s another debt collector and no throwing out official-looking envelopes because you’re afraid they’re bills or debt collection letters – then you should start working now to free yourself from debt. A life hounded by creditors and debt collectors is no life at all.
Debt Counseling
To start you off on the right track, get some debt counseling. A debt counselor can help you get a clear idea about your finances. More importantly, however, the debt counselor can suggest strategies that you can use to free yourself from debt. Through debt counseling, perhaps you would begin to see how you can improve your spending habits for the better and how better you can exercise self control over your spending urges.
Negotiate
You should also contact each of your creditors and see if you can work out a deal with each of them. Creditors would, of course, want you to pay your balances in full. However, they are busy companies with diverse interests. They may not have the time or they may not think it worth their while to start collection efforts against you.
By contacting them first, you will save them the cost of going after you through a debt collection agency or through the court. This may work in your favor; as a result, you may be granted better repayment terms or perhaps even allowed to pay an amount that is less than your actual balance due as long as you make a one-time, full payment.
Pay what you can
Among your debts, look for those that you can deal with here and now. If you can sell some of your assets, perhaps you can pay off one of your loans? If you become extra careful of how you spend your money, perhaps you can save enough to make a significant payment towards a high-interest loan? By dealing with the loans that you can pay off or significantly reduce, you will lessen your debt burden and gain some breathing room, so to speak.
Consolidate the rest of your debts
It is highly unlikely that you will be able to pay off all of your loans once you decide to get rid of your debts. After making significant payments towards some of your loans and paying off those that you can, you should now seriously consider consolidating all of your remaining debts. Your debt counselor should be able to help you search for a good debt consolidation loan.
Debt consolidation will not immediately free you from your debts, but it can be a great help. You’d only have one due date to remember so you should find it easier to make timely payments. Definitely, having only one loan should make financial planning less complicated as well.
Keep payments up to date
To get yourself out of debt, you should keep your word and pay as you said you would. Do not miss one payment due date and do not underpay. Instead, try to pay early and pay more than the minimum required by your debt consolidation loan.
Resist the lure of plastic
Finally, do not incur new debts. Resist credit card offers that will likely put you in debt once more. Just stick to your debt consolidation loan and do not take out any new ones.
Are there any secrets to success? Yes there are, but they are not sold in bookstores, in video shops and in the web. The secret lies in you and it’s your choice whether to “activate” your own success mode or just let it go to waste.
Get a Move on
When you want to go somewhere, you walk, drive or ride. If you will notice, you do something to get somewhere. You don’t wait for a good enough blast of wind to take you where you want to go. You don’t wait for a magic carpet to whisk you off to your destination. Becoming successful pretty much works the same way. To get somewhere in life – to get what you want or to attain whatever it is you want to achieve – you need to do something. You need to get yourself moving.
The Positive Personality Traits that Will Get You Moving
To get yourself moving up and towards your goal, you need to have drive or motivation and positive personality traits. What are the personality traits that you need to have in order to become successful?
First of all, you need to have self-confidence or a high level of self-esteem. When you have confidence in yourself and in your abilities, you will not be fazed by small challenges and you will effectively be indefatigable. When you are confident that you have the capacity to do something, then you’ll see the outcome as a certainty and you can focus yourself and your energies on the means and ways of realizing it. This is a much more productive way of spending your time and energy than wallowing in self-doubts.
Another related positive trait that you should definitely cultivate is positive thinking. The half-full, half-empty glass analogy may be a mite too clichéd, but it’s still relevant nonetheless. Indeed, the way you look at things play a crucial role in how things ultimately turn out. If you are a positive thinker, you will see problems and obstacles as mere challenges that you can overcome. Furthermore, you will see these problems as venues for learning something new and for self-improvement. When problems are viewed this way, they cease to become threatening and they are generally reduced in size, impact and importance.
Of course, you also have to have enthusiasm or zest – call it passion, if you want. Enthusiasm for your goal and for what you are doing or for what you are trying to achieve is very important if you are to succeed. It takes enthusiasm to move on and continue striving even when things are not doing as great as you want or expect them to be. Determination and single-mindedness are also important for the same reason.
To succeed, moreover, you have to have courage and you have to be realistic, too. Courage is what you need to take risks. However, you need to be realistic so that you’ll know which risks are worth taking and which are merely foolish.
Honing Positive Personality Traits
Even if you think that you already have these positive personality traits, it’s much better to objectively assess yourself. If you want, you can take personality assessment exams. Some are available online or you can also ask your therapist or your company counselor to administer the test. Moreover, since positive personality traits take time to develop, you’d better start honing them now. You can attend leadership seminars and workshops, for instance. Nevertheless, don’t lose sight of the fact that developing positive personality traits is not a one-off thing but a continuous process.
